EP 003: How to Actually Focus on Social Media and Avoid Distractions

You get on Instagram to post a photo, and you end up scrolling endlessly through your feed laughing at memes, watching videos and catching up on stories. Sound familiar? We’ve all been there. Social media is full of distractions, and while it can be used for really great things, it can also be a huge time suck.

So how do we actually focus on social media and avoid all the crazy distractions? I’m breaking it down on The Social Pod today, and giving you my top tips to staying focused including the 3 main things you should be focusing on when it comes to social media.

Listened to the Podcast on the run and didn’t have time to take notes? You’re in the right place.

3 Main Focuses on Social Media

1. Connect With Your Audience

Social Media is supposed to be social! Actually talking to and engaging with your audience is the best way to grow a following and community of people who actually care what you’re posting. This is so important. You can’t expect your followers to engage with you if you never engage with them, so get to DM’ing, commenting and liking! Show interest in your community and it will become that much stronger.

2. Build Your Brand

We’re on social media so people can easily find our business and brand. Social media gives us so much more opportunity to be found, seen and heard, so use it to your advantage.

3. Make Money

We want the time that we’re spending on social media to have an ROI for time spent. Yes, social media can be just for fun, but for a lot of us, this is our full-time gig or what we want our full-time job to be. So make sure you are using your time on social media in a way that’s going to be worth while (hint: watching hours of stories or slime videos aren’t going to make you money).

Top Tips to Focus on Social Media

  1. Schedule your content in advance (we love Iconosquare for Instagram)
  2. Stay off your personal accounts during the work day
  3. Avoid the scroll
  4. Block out engagement times and stick to them
  5. Turn off your social media notifications
